More About The Shaka
According to local island lore, the shaka was started by a sugar mill worker who lost his three middle fingers in a factory accident. He was reassigned as a security guard for the sugar train and would flash his “shaka” as an all-clear sign. The sign, which is a wave with the thumb and pinkie finger extended and middle fingers curled down, became associated with surf culture during the 1960s when visiting surfers from the mainland adopted the gesture. Today, it has many meanings including “Hang Loose”, “Hi”, “Thank You”, “All Right”, “See You”, “Peace”, “Goodbye” and “Take Care”.
